Graded Assignment 2: April 21, 2013

Hello,

The International Society For Technology in Education (ISTE) has developed the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for students in order to:

  • Improve higher-order thinking skills, such as problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity
  • Prepare students for their future in a competitive global job market
  • Design student-centered, project-based, and online learning environments
  • Guide systemic change in our schools to create digital places of learning
  • Inspire digital age professional models for working, collaborating, and decision making

  • Your work is to go to this website (ISTE Wiki), pick one of the six standards on the left hand side, choose one of the scenarios provided, and tell us how would you modify it to better represent the chosen standard.

NB Please, you need to specify WHICH standard you pick, and WHICH scenario you will be discussing. Thanks.

    Good Luck!

      1. Dear Hamda, thank you for the informative comment! but I think you should re read the post and delete this comment and re write it! You have to do 4 things: Go to Wiki, read all standards and pick one, choose one of the scenarios, and you need to modify it! So, it will take some work! Good Luck! Zeina

    3. TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS(Scenario B: Submitted by Michael Baker)

The idea of this business project is very fruitful for grade 5 students, especially that they are using many technological tools(Microsoft Word,Print Shop, and Garage Band). This project will develop their critical thinking about many fields of business concerning the management of their trade, and marketing of the products that they are supposed to sell. I think that they can improve this project by doing an excel sheet to calculate their profits, revenues, and costs. Moreover, they can make discounts on some items, and implement the math formulas that will help them to calculate the new price of an item after the discount. This idea will develop their thinking in financial math(calculating profits, discounts,...). However, it can be considered a good beginning that will create a prior knowledge for Microsoft excel to benefit from it in the coming years. I think that every project must have a slight taste of math to be an effective one. Also, when the project is presented, peers will be motivated and interested by using math in selling, buying, and in managing the profits and costs.

    4. Standard: FLUENCY(Scenario A: Submitted by Kendra Grant)

Kidspirations is a great software tool used for mapping out stories, brainstorming and helping build writing and reading skills and is used for grades Kindergarten-5th grade. They could use words or pictures to help them with their brainstorming. This program also allows the students to compare stories, describing a character, retelling or sequencing a story, or create their own journals. In this scenario the main purpose of the lesson was to let students learn about animals and create a "page" for a non-fiction animal book using the features of text as a guide. This included creating a labeled diagram of their animal, saving it as a symbol in Kidspiration and pasting it into the page. From the text we can notice that students are of different abilities because some needed the help of the teacher while others could work independently. First of all the teacher planned every step from the beginning till the end; she helped the students and guided them in every possible way, she got everything prepared to prevent wasting time, and then she started guiding the students towards achieving the objective of the lesson. The students used books, videos and the internet to locate information about their animals.Students express their creativity and develop critical thinking skills as they were working on different activities assigned by the teacher; Some students were responsible to use Kidspiration's "Listen" feature to gather information, others were given a completed web and they added symbols/pictures to make meaning. The remaining students recorded their information in the web independently. Students then went to the written outline and completed their sentences. In addition to that, we have students who recorded their ideas using Kidspiration’s Record feature. Some students finished sentences typed into the outline by the teacher. The remaining students completed the sentences independently. Their efforts finally paid off,and the student's work was printed and a class book was created. I believe that this program is a great tool to utilize in the classroom. Kidspiration is a useful software that helps students organize information and concepts. The teacher created an activity that would help students learn about the characteristics of their favorite animals and she accomplished her objective successfully.

    5. Standard: Communication and Collaboration( Scenario D submitted by Tamera Terndrup)

This scenario illustrates a somehow traditional method of teaching a foreign language. The teacher was depending on the language tools that are built in Microsoft Word and on blogging. However, I think it is a time consuming method for teachers and students to send what they have learned and wait the teacher's correction. I can modify this scenario through the integration of an "Air Liner", which is a wireless slate that allows interaction with smart boards from 50 feet distance. This device permits more than one person to work simultaneously in spelling and writing the new vocabulary words of the foreign language. This technique enhances the student's engagement and increases their amenability towards criticism or correction. I should state that:" Teachers must not be worried about losing technical control in class, because students are more interested and interactive when technology is engaged in their studies and that is considered as their profession. Students know more than teachers know technologically."
Note that it is not necessary to have smart boards to integrate this technique, because it can work with any note book software (LCD projector). Teachers must try this method of integration that turns any passive classroom into an interactive classroom.

    7. Standard: Creativity and Innovation; Scenario A (Submitted by Mariam Zinati and Lisa Bergin)

This scenario represents a program that fosters creativity and innovation in junior students. The program is a two-day course in a uniquely modified classroom environment involving parents, teachers, and students. The classroom is called RoboDome and its goal is to teach collaborative problem solving and higher level thinking skills to grade 5 OCCDSB students. It is designed to enhance the learning experience of students through the theme of designing, building, and programming robots. During the program, students have access to several technologies such as laptops, LCD projectors, and Lego technology. Students in groups up to four share ideas and opinions, communicate thoughts, and work as a team to complete the challenge. They get to build a choosed robot or one from their own design and creations. Once they complete the program ( building a robot), they would generate new ideas, processes, and products; and they will realize the importance of technology in their lives.
I think that this program is very beneficial where students will be able to construct knowledge and develop critical thinking skills. Such outcomes will definitely enhance creativity and innovation in students. So, I see that this scenario fits in a perfect place under this standard. However, if I want to modify it, I suggest to have rewards at the end of the program for the team having the best robot accomplished. This will increase challenge, motivation, and competetitive skills in students. Thus will explode their creativity and innovation.

      2. Assignment 3:
The program used in this scenario seems very interesting and it does promote creativity and innovation. I agree with Haifa that adding awards at the end of the activity will increase the students' competitive skills therefore, motivating them and driving their creativity and innovation in class. I would like to add to Haifa's modification to this scenario. The instructor should consider including a few classes outdoors in his lesson plan.Outdoor activities especially in nature promote the students' creative thought.I believe that asking the students to design , build and program robots limit their innovative thinking to that purpose only, therefore the activity should be more general than that.

    8. Technology operations and concepts (scenario D):

This scenario represents a highly effective way of teaching in the scientific subjects. The high school provides a laptop for each student with a wireless connection. When students want to work on a lab exercise or experiment, they receive a document which has a list of tables and instructions to enter data. By using digital probes, they collect some of the data which is uploaded into the tables. After they finish collecting data, they transfer the tables into a spreadsheet to make calculations and graph the data. They generate equations using Excel and calculate the R-squared value to know the accuracy of their measurements. Then they have to answer some questions concerning the lab exercise in order to assess their understanding, and they are asked to find additional information using the internet.

I think that this scenario is appropriate for the standard of technology operations and concepts. It will help students use Microsoft Excel in order to enhance their learning of certain scientific procedures (by plotting graphs of a titration curve for example and calculating the R-squared value). To modify it, I will give each student a different experiment to work on. After they finish working on Microsoft Excel, they would make a power-point presentation containing all the graphs and a detailed explanation of the experiment. I will evaluate them on their creativity in finding the most beneficial information from the internet. The person with the best presentation will earn extra grades on their final exam. Even though this is time consuming, but it will help students to become more organized and creative. It would also them in using PowerPoint effectively which would make studying for the final exam easier for them.

    9. Communication and Collaboration: Scenario C

The selected scenario represents an effective yet entertaining example of Communication and Collaboration. This scenario explains how students can engage themselves to be live inthe media world. In this activity, students actually become story tellers by recording their actual voice to tell a story on their own. Students think of a person who has the greatest impact on or who he/she admires the most and tell their stories on how successful that person became, the goals he/she accomplished, the difficulties he/she faced in life and how he learned from it, etc. Also, students can show the listeners and viewers some pictures, music, spoken words, and subtitles. I believe students can excel their inner genius by blossoming with their inner ability. Students become motivated to get engaged in this activity and show the world how creative he/she can be.

As an educator, I believe that students create a great sense of cultural awareness and understanding. Also, team work is fostered and encouraged between students.

Digital story teller is an interesting and fun way to implement in students' projects and to create a new sort of activity in class away from lecturing and using pens and papers because students will be using their own voice on an advanced technology tool or program.

    10. Standard:Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
      Scenario D: Meg Griffin
The selected Scenario is a very effective and excellent example of Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making. Where the scenario explains how students are able to understand a science lesson by experiencing and experimenting using an accurate technological tool (Electronic temperature sensor).
As shown in the example, that the students were so excited, cooperating, interactive in the lesson, willingly to know about the lesson where they had the ability to test the facts on them by taking the temperatures as teacher advised them thinking of ideas of why their is a difference in temperatures finding solutions on how to decrease it again in reality & recognizing the difference. Moreover, this example made them discuss, analyse, experiment and coming up with best decisions and conclusions.
And I believe that the teacher shouldn't just keep them in class but also try and experiment outside the class, labs etc. and let them come up with their own conclusions and observations

problem solving and decision making are very important to be included in so many lessons. that example that Suha explained was how students are able to use a technological tool which is the electronic temperature sensor and experiment.
i can say that according to the experiment shown , inserting a technological tool to let students experiment will let them feel so excited and cooperative and also made them discuss, analyse and come up with their own conclusion after cooperating with their peers.
After Suha's explanation, i was able to have an eye how technology affects students positively . Going outside the classroom is also a very important idea were students are able to explore and experience more

    11. The standard is (critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making)Scenario C: submitted by Ben Smith.

The scenario aims at implementing technology in school, but since technology is used extensively in the world, this would be a great training and preparation for students to use it in their real life especially in work field where it is required and needed. This usage of technology will be a lead in to sharpen their skills later in their real life situations.

Scenario C applies the standard by allowing students to:

      1. define authentic problems by giving them the chance to use technology in order to receive and deliver information in addition to solving problems by choosing the best tool. Students used (Video Point,Inspiration, Word etc.)

      2. plan activities to complete a web video project by using a camcorder to record a type of motion picture and a still digital camera for more photos to be used in the website. To develop solutions for analyzing data, they created a short video, while the longer one for the motion (using iMovie).

      3. analyze data (motion pictures) by using the software (Video Point) which will help them make graphs. Also, they used (Inspiration) to create a map explaining their work and to make a website for their ideas. Then they used (Word) to edit their files to be uploaded to the internet.

Later students will comment on each other's work on a discussion board, but I think this part should be more extended and detailed since it is the forth point (using multiple processes to explore solutions). As students worked hard and tried multi-processes to come up with a project, they can specify the kind of problem their peers have and give the appropriate solution by giving the right tool knowing that this scenario is all about solving problems by using the right tool.

    12. Creativity and Innovation Scenario C: Submitted by Will Manvell
Will Manvell wants his students to learn about the continents and there different cultures. He wants them to represent the African characters your clay models and create a movie in which they implement the music they have studied.
I have two ways to modify his strategy:
      1. Students may use the internet (voki.com) to create avatars. Each avatar represents a different culture by his/her customs. They will use these avatars to create a movie where they use the music they have studied. Each avatar will represent a student and will speak in his voice.
      2. Another way is that every student will design his own custom that represents a character of different cultures. They will act a play or a movie in which they bring the special customs they have designed and food of every culture. All the class will participate in it and they will implement the music they have learned. The play or movie will be exposed to all the classes in the school.
In these ways, the students will be exposed to new cultures, their customs, food, and language. They will apply their knowledge of cultures to create their own customs either on the computer or real customs.

      1. Assignment #3:

After reading scenario C and your comment; I think that your suggestions can really enhance creativity and innovation in 3rd grade students. I liked the idea that you provided two suggestions to modify the scenario: one using technology through the creation of avatars and the other without using technology. This means that even though if technology can't be available, students can still be creative and they can still demonstrate critical thinking.
I think that in both modifications students will be interested in learning and working cooperatively, and they will be more encouraged to participate and to discover more continents.
In addition to your modifications, i think that students should also draw or design the map of the continent they are studying on a poster. By doing that they will be able to locate each continent on the map and get to know more about the borders. It will also benefit students by allowing them to know more about the geography of each continent, so they can gain factual knowledge and at the same time be creative by their drawings ( since the lesson is also focusing on arts).

    13. Creativity and Innovation: Scenario D: Submitted by Peter Crooke
Crooke integrated the idea of Alice Walker's novel , The Color Purple,in which Walker tell her own story. with iMovie. By this integration, the students were able to focus on an essential question and theme that brought their discussions to a deep level of critical thinking. The iMovies/podcasts tried to answer that question from a perspective of the student. Each student created a movie that showed his/her environment and included an original poem, original photography and original music created in Garage Band. This gave students a deep understanding of their own environments.
Concerning the standard, in this scenario, the standards of promoting higher order thinking skills like problem solving and critical thinking and creativity are absolutely satisfied. It is a very interesting and fun way to learn about an objective or a lesson and project that lesson to one's life.Criticizing by making up original poems and songs, and creating a whole new movie for one's own environment.
What I would modify in his strategy is:
1-Teamwork between students in creating an iMovie
      2-Use more than this tool
3-use the iMovies prepared by the students in a film festival or such for motivation and reward

    14. Technology Operations and Concepts
Scenario B: Submitted by Michael Baker

the scenario is great, it gives practice to the technology systems and gives back a feedback of whether students actually understand these technologies, and gain enough experience to use them properly.

However, in this scenario, the groups had to use multiple tools to do the same task (ex. create commercials using iMovie and camcorders). A jack of all trades is a master of none; hence I advice these students to use only one tool during these projects to gain enough students, and then use the other in a different project.
these students should know how to pick the tool that is more usful and productive for them.

Moreover, if a certain group/individual were highly proficient in using a certain tool, I would encourage them at this point to learn a new, more advanced program.

    15. Standard: Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making (Scenario D, submitted by: Meg Griffin)
The scenario describes the students’ enthusiasm linking the application of the experience to prior knowledge which is critical thinking. It is obvious that the lesson is very well designed which support and promote critical thinking. Old and traditional curricular materials (ie workbooks, textbooks) do not enhance critical thinking in students, but the blend of science skills and content with technology encourage critical thinking and of course it shouldn’t be an option in the classroom but a must. Educators need to be comfortable creating and asking higher level questions and allowing students to ask questions to develop and model their critical thinking and make them a better problem solver by challenging themselves.
In this scenario it is very clear that Educational Technology is highly used and all students will use digital tools to access, manage, evaluate, and synthesize information in order to solve problems individually and collaboratively and to create and communicate knowledge. When the teaching method is successful and the educator uses students-centered method in his classroom, critical thinking and training to effective problem solving and decision making are smoothly learned and applied by students and encourage students to apply their findings to the real-world scenario outside the classroom especially in the work field.
It is obvious in this scenario that Critical thinking is a learned skill that requires instruction and practice. The goal for all educators who want to instill critical thinking skills in their classrooms is to think of their students not as receivers of information, but as users of information. Learning environments that actively engage students in the investigation of information and the application of knowledge will promote students’ critical thinking skills and also problem solving and decision making. However, as with any skill, critical thinking requires training, practice, and patience. Students may initially resist instructional questioning techniques if they previously have been required only to remember information and not think about what they know. However, by encouraging students throughout the process and modeling thinking behaviors, students’ critical thinking skills can improve. The effort is worth the reward: students who can critically think for themselves and solve real-world problems.

      Senario: C
      Submitted by Diana Laufenberg

In this senario the teacher used digital storytelling. students were really motivated, even the low standard students. They worked day and night and even in weekends. Students acted out and filmed different characters and stories. This project helped students learn about different cultures and traditions. It also helped students develop their problem solving skills.
I would recommend to act stories in the theater and film it so that it would be viewed by a large number of audience. This will motivate the students more. Students may be asked to travel to other countries and speak different languages. For example they may travel to Rome and act out the life of Julius Ceasar.

    17. standard: Creativity and Innovation
      Scenario B:
in this scenario , a 6th grade student is working on the Entrepreneur project . It is a compelling experience for all students especially those who have great potential. All students will run their own business in teams or individually.
The assessment criteria for this project are: - description of the project -- description of the firm-- planning and preparation-- innovation, creativity and craftsmanship- Marketing strategy and success-- firm log( description of process, deals and cooperation) -- product -- Homepage, advertising, folders-- Stand and presentation-- own assessment.
The aims of the Entrepreneur project is that students:
1- can plan and are responsible for completing an Entrepreneur project before leaving SPF.
2- Experience the newest principles of project oriented work.
3- establish a connection between school life and commercial life
4- gain knowledge in specific areas like marketing budget planning and sales.
this project is very efficient project to be used in schools but i recommend that it must be mentioned in the curriculum and to have like a specific library or room to apply this project because i believe it's very important to improve the child's creativity for now and for his future. In addition to this, i recommend that a checklist also must be done to evaluate the student's work individually and in groups.
Last but not least, i believe that when you study, the aim of getting wiser can sometimes feel distant, but as an entrepreneur u have your goal, right in front of your work as hard as u can and do your best. this puts your everyday life into perspective.

Scenario B: Submitted by Beth Herick

Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students:
1.applied existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes through creating their own ideas in their own projects and how to get everything into the floor plan created in Paint.
2.created original works as a means of personal or group expression by using of excel for budgeting and showing expenditures and the culmination of the project which is Advertising.
3.used models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues by conceiving, script, "star in", produce, film and edit a one minute commercial. The students do this completely on their own.
4.identified trends and forecast possibilities by doing the work and making a DVD of their commercials for viewing by the entire 6th grade as well as their parents as the students will be able to take home their efforts.
it was a real outstanding way of creativity and innovation which i appreciate it and its usage in Lebanon. it was really great work!and real learning!

    19. The standard is Communication and collaboration Scenario B: Submitted By: Silvia Tolisano
The scenario's objective is to implement global curriculum, by helping students broaden their horizon and educate globally aware citizens.

the scenario B applies to this standard by helping students:
1- Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple viewers through the " blog your way to China through time and space".
2-Develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures. The teachers guided the students to explore cultural universal, such as transportation, food, clothing, education, economy and comparing and contrasting it their lives in the USA.
3- Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems.all were taken along with technology.
4- Interact, collaborate and publish with peers by the video conference through skype.

This method used enhanced communication and interaction through cultural differences. It introduced different concepts and skills by arousing the student's curiosity in knowing more about the other country's traditions. Through this method the students were able to compare and contrast and communicate effectively with others. Moreover, the most crucial part is that three different age appropriate programs were actively participated in that virtual filed trip.
